AOTEAROA LEADERSHIP TOUR 2023 CONVENOR

APPLY HERE: https://unyouth.wufoo.com/forms/international-activity-convenors

The Aotearoa Leadership Tour (ALT) is an opportunity for high school students to explore Australia’s relationship with its first peoples through an intercultural tour of New Zealand. To learn more about ALT, click here:

http://www.unyouth.org.au/event/aotearoa-leadership-tour

What is the role?

The ALT 2023 Convenor will be responsible for coordinating their team of deputy convenors. Together, the team must plan and run the whole tour, including:

  • Developing the itinerary,
  • Making bookings including flights, accommodation, and activities,
  • Managing tour finances,
  • Mitigate pandemic risks,
  • Recruiting delegates,
  • Mentoring and acting as welfare officers for the participants during the tour.

The theme for ALT is ‘Revisiting Reconciliation’. This focuses on the institutional interaction between Indigenous peoples, and the majority white nation-state. Consultations and educational activities will be primarily focused around change made by the country as a whole, looking at political systems, constitutional recognition, treaties and the like. The main educational aim of the tour is to educate delegates on the history of the country’s relations with its Indigenous people, and how these actions taken in the past have shaped current relations with the Maori people. This in turn provides a strong base for delegates to be able to compare and contrast Australian Indigenous relations with those they will explore in New Zealand. The Convenor will be expected to run the tour with an educational plan in accordance with this theme, as set by National Council.

In 2019, the cost for facilitators of the tour was $1,500 plus out of pocket expenses associated with travel. It must be noted that this was pre-COVID-19, and therefore costs will likely be higher. The Convenor will be responsible for their own expenses. The registration fee must be paid in full prior to the departure of the tour. A payment plan will be developed through consultation between the Finance Officer and the Convenor in order to balance the cash flow requirements of the tour against personal budgeting.

Candidates should also be able to demonstrate:

  • Strong facilitation skills and the ability to work well in a team,
  • Logistical, organisational, and problem solving skills,
  • Ability to work to deadlines, and
  • Ability to work with the National Executive to maximise the success of the tour and the health and wellbeing of participants.

Applicants must:

  • Be aged 18 years or older by February 2022,
  • A current member of UN Youth Australia,
  • Have current Senior First Aid, CPR qualifications, and Youth Mental Health First Aid at the time of the tour in July 2023.
